Working draft horses have a hard life

This beautiful mare was rescued from slaughter only a month ago. It is likely she had a hard working life given that she was a draft and was rescued in Central Ontario. While drafts are big and strong, they can only be pushed so much. When they are overworked it takes a toll on their bodies.

Despite vet care and special PEMF treatments, her body gave out on her. One day she went down and was not able to get back up. The only thing that could be done was to give her the Last Act of Kindness.

We are so grateful for her rescuers, saving her from a horrific ending at slaughter. While we know they are sad they could not have done more for her, they did give her a loving, peaceful and dignified ending. We were so pleased we could provide them with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.

Fall is a time when many horse owners are facing tough decisions about the horses that likely won't make it through winter.
