Needless suffering

Just like the story we shared yesterday, this is another one that is harder to tell. 😓

The owner of this beautiful boy had tried to rehome him several times. We don't know what came of all those attempts. All we know is that the RCMP became involved. Only 3 years old, he was suffering immensely.

Thankfully his owner agreed to surrender him to Horse Heroes Alberta. He was immediately taken to the vet where they discovered he had a broken pelvis, among other health issues. Nothing more could be done except to give him the Last Act of Kindness.

Yes, his owner should have done better by him. It can be very easy to get caught up in anger over how he suffered needlessly. But we choose to focus on gratitude for everyone involved with getting him the care he desperately needed, including his owner who surrendered him instead of sending him to auction where he would have been at high risk of entering the slaughter pipeline. We are so grateful we could provide Horse Heroes Alberta with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.

The Bouvry slaughter facility in Alberta has closed but the one in Quebec is still operating and we have received word that kill buyers are shipping them from as far as Alberta to that plant. No horse should have to endure that transport ride, especially a painfully injured one.
