This beautiful, healthy and beloved mare was stricken with colic, every horse owners worst nightmare. Her owner had recently lost her job and was unable to provide the care she need so they reached out to New Start Standardbreds for help. Even though they don't normally step up in situations like these, the owner had been a long time supporter of theirs and she was understandably frantic. They arranged for their vet to tend to her but unfortunately by the time they arrived her intestines had ruptured. The only thing that could be done was to give her the Last Act of Kindness to end her suffering.
Colic is always a serious health emergency and can worsen very quickly. It is difficult to know the cause and without surgery a serious impaction colic can easily become deadly.
We are grateful to New Start Standardbreds for helping her in her greatest time of need. It is difficult for any charity to take on the financial responsibility of any emergency. Many others might not have said "yes" to her owner's plea for help. We were pleased to be able to provide them with our humane euthanasia grant. Knowing we are here for horse rescue organizations with our grants means they can be there for more horses.
