Maple

In early 2025 Maple found herself very pregnant and suddenly in the hands of the local kill buyer. She came from a Quarter Horse breeder and we don't know why she ended up there. Sadly, it is not uncommon for broodmares who have given their lives to making babies to be tossed aside in their later years. But usually it is because they can no longer get pregnant and Maple was very far along in her pregnancy.

Thankfully the kill buyer reached out to 5 Freedoms Ranch and Rescue and they took her in. Broodmares are also often not given the benefit of training leaving them unhandled and fearful of humans. While they could not be certain of that with Maple, she definitely was afraid of everything when she arrived. They patiently worked with her and eventually were able to put a halter on her and the farrier was able to trim her hooves.

In March she gave birth to a beautiful filly they named Jersey. Maple was a great mom and everyone at 5 Freedoms loved watching the two of them together. Sadly, Maple had a terrible run in with some fencing. The wire cut through a joint in her back leg into the synovial membrane. This kind of wound invites infection into the joint, requiring immediate and intensive intervention and there are no guarantees of recovery. Their vet recommended she be given the Last Act of Kindness. Thanks to our donors we were able to provide the with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.
