Gone too soon

Another heartbreaking story of a young horse gone too soon. This beautiful Thoroughbred had an accident in his pasture which resulted in a fractured wither. Despite surgery usually providing a good prognosis, he developed complications that severely compromised his quality of life. The only thing left was to give him the Last Act of Kindness.

He was only 5 years old and had been rescued at an auction, given up as a yearling by the breeder, probably because he was not "up to track standards". We are so grateful his owners did everything they could to help him recover from his injuries and that when it was clear he could not live without pain they did right by him instead of sending him to auction where he would have been at high risk of entering the slaughter pipeline.

We know how hard it is to face end of life decisions. But it is the greatest act of love to set them free from their failing bodies. Horses do not fear death, they fear suffering, and at only 5 years old he faced a life of prolonged suffering. We were pleased to have been able to provide his owner with our Humane Euthanasia grant.
