Teddy was rescued at auction by Blackbird Ranch Equine Rescue and Rehab. He was old, thin, tired and sore. Once he arrived at their facility, it was clear he was worse than they first realized. One of his stifles swung freely making him is unable to bear much weight on it, which meant they were not even able to trim his back hooves. The only thing the could do for him was give him the Last Act of Kindness.
Teddy was dumped at auction in this condition. His owners likely knew he needed humane euthanasia but instead chose to get some money for his ailing body. While his story stirs up a lot of emotion, we don't see any benefit in shaming his owners for their decision. Shame is not a productive emotion. It makes people hide what they are ashamed of instead of seeking help. We believe the only way to protect horses like Teddy is through our Humane Euthanasia Grant, available to private horses owners and horse rescue organizations.
That is why we started Legacy's Fund. Our goal is to one day be able to fully cover the cost of humane euthanasia so no horse has be taken to auction and sold into the slaughter pipeline.
