Sweet Miss Maisy

There are a lot of things in the horse world to be concerned about, but one of the saddest is how misunderstood donkeys and mules are. It so often leads to horrible neglect and immense suffering.
Miss Maisy was a very sweet and gentle hinny who was rescued at auction by Horse Sanctuary at Finn Farms, along with her friend Hank. Both were clearly suffering and in desperate need of rescue. They were lucky because their rescuers ended up in a bidding war with someone who wanted them for coyote protection! That would have been a horrible fate for them given their poor condition. Most likely they would have continued to be neglected.
The next morning Miss Maisy was seen by the vet and the news was worse than anyone expected. She had previously foundered quite badly in her left front hoof and the compensating muscle in her hind end had completely atrophied. Her hip bone protruded and it was not where it should have been. Her poor little body had become distorted from the prolonged suffering she endured from her extensive injuries. She was no longer able to lay down. If she did, she would not have been able to get back up. She was in horrible pain and the only thing that could be done was to give her the Last Act of Kindness. Her friend Hank has been grieving the loss of her ever since. He has some health issues of concern but for now he is being lovingly cared for by Horse Sanctuary at Finn Farms.
The suffering that Miss Maisy endured was so unnecessary and so wrong. Please, if you or someone you know has an equine in need of the Last Act of Kindness, reach out for help. Horses rescues are often at capacity but they will also often do what they can. Our Humane Euthanasia Grant is available to all equine owners across Canada.
