Scarlet, the herd matriarch and Sasha, her best friend for almost 20 years, together forever
These two beautiful mares have been together since they were rescued as yearlings in December 2007 by Dare to Dream Horse Rescue. They were part of the the very first trailer load of horses they rescued, outbidding the meat buyer.
Recently they found Sasha down in the field all by herself, unwilling to get up. One look and they knew she was in a severe colic episode. They were able to get her up and move her closer to the barn as they waited for the vet to arrive. Sasha was in a lot of pain, striking the ground with her front feet. Although she was comforted by the caring touch of her rescuers, it was clear nothing could be done except to give her the Last Act of Kindness.
Immediately they had to turn their attention to Scarlet. The minute she saw her friend's body Scarlet became visibly distressed. Scarlet had her own health issues but the bigger concern was how she would do without her friend as her constant companion. They knew Scarlet well, having cared for her and Sasha for 19 years. They knew her grief would be too much and that her health would suffer. Their vet agreed and she too was given the Last Act of Kindness.
Scarlet and Sasha were special to everyone at Dare to Dream Rescue. Volunteers loved spending time cuddling and grooming them. Both were incredibly gentle with kids. They will be dearly missed by many.
We are so grateful they were rescued and were able to spend their lives together in the same home, a rarity for horses. They were very fortunate. Thanks to your support we were able to provide them with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.
