Rupert

Rupert's mom Rosey found herself 10 months pregnant at the Dawson Creek, BC auction in February 2025. A traumatized rodeo pony who had been bred to a Percheron draft stud. It is the worst of backyard breeding, a pony dam with a draft stud. It represents no regard for the well being of the dam or foal. Sadly, this is not uncommon in backyard breeding. Why? Because a horse purchased for meat is sold by the pound. For a kill buyer a pregnant horse, and especially one bred to a draft, means more money in their pocket.

And that is exactly what happened. Rosey was purchased by a kill buyer. But she fought for her life, striking out at auction staff to the point eventually the meat buyer didn't want her. Thankfully Misfit Meadows Sanctuary was able to purchase her from the kill buyer and bring her to safety.

Soon after Rupert was born a healthy colt. Fortunately his mom was able to deliver him despite his breeding. While she’s terrified of loud voices and fast movements, Rupert has known only kindness. At 10 months old it was time for him to become a good citizen. We are so grateful to our supporters and it is thanks to their generosity that we were able to provide them with our Gelding Grant.
