Holliday

Holliday (Everdayaholliday) was a Standardbred who was rescued by his breeder from a kill pen in February 2024. He was only 8 years old at the time. Sadly his story is a reminder that no horse is safe from the slaughter pipeline, even highly desirable, well bred horses.

A thorough vet exam revealed that Holliday had at some point suffered an immense physical trauma. It appeared as though his neck had previously been broken! Holliday deserved to somewhere he could live out his days comfortably and New Start Standardbreds took him in August of that year.

Over the next year, his devoted foster mom gave him the best of everything, from vet care to other treatments. Unfortunately the neurological issues resulting from the permanent damage caused by the old neck injury eventually took their toll. Nothing more could be done to relieve his suffering and he was given the Last Act of Kindness.

We are so grateful to his breeder for initially rescuing him and for New Start Standardbreds for giving him a wonderful place to live out the last months of his life. We were pleased to have supported them with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.

Rehoming a horse with so much physical damage is fraught with serious risks for the safety of the horse. It wasn't surprising Holliday had ended up in a kill pen. He was rescued but many are not and end up going to slaughter. It doesn't have to be this way. With your support we can continue to make our Humane Euthanasia Grant available to private horse owners as well as rescue organizations, so every horse can be given the Last Act of Kindness when their time has come.
