A blind horse and his long time pasture mate

These two gorgeous geldings were rescued out of the meat pen last fall. They had been long time pasture mates so thankfully they were rescued together. Especially because one of them was blind and very dependent on his friend. Imagine the terror he would have experienced had he gone to slaughter. Unable to see he would have been frightened by all the new smells, unfamiliar sounds and strange people, probably handling him roughly.

The other gelding no longer had any teeth, which meant providing him with soaked feed. While that may not be too difficult to manage in warmer months, it is almost impossible in remote northern Alberta in the winter months. He was also dangerously herd bound with his long time pasture mate whose time had come. His owner decided it was best to give them the Last Act of Kindness together. We were very pleased to have been able to provide them with our Humane Euthanasia Grant.

We are so grateful to his rescuers for keeping them together as they were able to spend their last few months with each other.

It is our genuine wish that if someone can no longer care for their senior horses that they not send them to auction where they are at high risk of being sold for slaughter. Instead, do right by them and give them a peaceful end with dignity. They deserve it. Reach out for help and apply for our Humane Euthanasia Grant.
