How does a horse end up in the slaughter pipeline? This is how. And hers is just one story of many. 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴
Attending horse auction is not an easy thing to do. Inevitably there are horses whose conditions break your heart. Rescuers go in knowing this ahead of time. They show up anyway, thankfully.
The people at the Horse Sanctuary at Finn Farms once again did just that. As soon as they laid eyes on one particular horse they knew they had seen her before. Sure enough, she had been posted online for sale for several weeks. But she clearly had at least one bad knee so no one was interested. Instead of humanely euthanizing her, her owner took her to auction. But the horse they saw at the auction was not the same horse that had been advertised. Now she was emaciated. While her owner was trying to sell her they had also starved her.
There is absolutely no need to do that to animal. Horse rescue organizations are often full but that doesn't mean they won't try to help. They are often part of a network of people trying to help as many horses as they can. In her case, none of the local rescues were contacted. We cannot know what was happening in her owner's life. We are not here to judge or shame. We are here to educate and let every horse owner know that it is ok to reach out for help. No one wants to see your horse suffer or end up in the slaughter pipeline.
Her rescuers took her home and did everything they could to make her comfortable but the pain in her knees was too much. Even with high does of pain medication she could no longer stand. The only thing left was to give her the Last Act of Kindness. We are so grateful they saved her from slaughter and that she was given the care she do desperately needed. We were pleased to have been able to provide them with our Humane Euthanasia Grant, all thanks to our wonderful donors.
