PMU farms = unwanted babies

PMU farms, where urine is collected from pregnant mares (for the medication Premarin, a hormone replacement therapy for menopause), were once part of a major industry in Canada. That industry has declined drastically since its peak in the 1990s, for a variety of reasons. One of the consequences was hundreds of horses (maybe thousands), mares and babies, were brought to auction. The lucky ones founds new homes. Many were sold for slaughter. There is so much more to this subject, but that is for another post.
This beautiful girl was one of the lucky ones. Rescued at 2 years old, she was still just a baby. Though she had a good life, she did suffer some injuries that ultimately made her pain unmanageable. At 19 years old, the pain medication stopped working and she was chronically lame. Her owner decided to release her from her suffering and gave her the Last Act of Kindness. We were so pleased to be able to provide her with our Humane Euthanasia grant.
Fall is a time when many horse owners are facing tough decisions about the horses that likely won't make it through winter.
